Ancient Treasures!

As time goes by, our culture is slowly disappearing. Many improvements are showing up like technology and modernity. We should not let those ancient treasures like traditions and cultures fade away. We should appreciate, preserve and improve those. Good thing, we have this Kannawidan Festival.

Tourists really love to visit the province of Ilocos Sur because it is rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. Ilocos Sur has a rich heritage and unique culture that are to be preserved for the next generations because it is observed that many of these traditions, songs, dances and other Ilocano culture are not familiar to the younger generations already. Children of today are paying more attention to the modern and novelty dances they seen on the television than the traditional ones. Because of this, the provincial government of Ilocos Sur conceived a festival that will highlight these culture and traditions and attract local and foreign tourists as well. They call it the KANNAWIDAN Ylocos Festival, it is also a time to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur as a province since it was separated on February 3, 1818.

Kannawidan became one of the most awaited annual celebrations in the province and consequently improves Ilocano culture. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. There are different activities that showcase the treasured culture and traditions of Ilocos.

We have a simpler celebration of the annual Kannawidan Ylocos Festival this year. This is caused by the deadly coronavirus. Thinking the fact that a lot of activities are missing this year makes me very sad. But despite of this pandemic, Ilocanos still manage to celebrate the festival. The provincial government did their best to continue the Kannawidan Festival. They created the Trade and Food Fair 2021 and they also conducted the Saniata Ti Ylocos Sur and Summer Sports Fest 2021. Those are the highlights of this year’s Kannawidan Festival. There is a limit of people who are allowed to enter the event place to prevent spreading the virus so the Ilocos Sur government did some livestreams in Facebook to share the activities.

The pandemic destroyed a lot but it will never change or destroy us from being festive. We still manage to showcase our culture and traditions despite of this difficult situation we are facing right now. I am proud to be an Ilocano! I am hoping and praying that next year we can celebrate the festival the way we celebrate it before. Let’s continue preserving and improving our culture! Let’s showcase our ancient treasures!
